What is Winter Percussion at Desert Vista High School?

Winter Percussion is an opportunity for 7th to 11th graders to get an introduction into what we do in the percussion section for marching band.

You will get a chance to play the different marching percussion instruments available, as well as practice and perform with current staff and members of the percussion programs at Desert Vista High School.

This is a great opportunity for students who want to see what it’s like to perform with a marching percussion ensemble, as well as those who want to get a head start in preparing to audition for the fall semester percussion section in the marching band.

Never played a marching percussion instrument? No worries – we do lots of work on practice pads and make sure to keep similar ability levels together. This is your chance to give it a try!!!

Cost:
Cost for the entire season (which is the schedule listed above) is $75.  Which is a good deal when you consider the hours of instruction students are receiving.
Safety:
We are aware of the current situation with group gatherings.  Just like other school sport activities that are currently starting up and practicing in Phoenix, we are taking the following precautions:
  • Temperature checks upon arrival
  • Equipment placed on stationary stands to allow 6′ of distance to be maintained at all times while playing
  • Strict staff enforcement of 6′ distancing while on breaks
  • We’ll have at least two rooms to split up the group, which allows for better distancing
  • Restroom trips are limited to 1 person at a time
  • Masks required at all times, including while playing.  Again, enforced by staff
  • Hand sanitizer and wipes are readily available at all times
  • Bringing of own water is required as to not gather around a water fountain
Trust me, we want our activity to continue, and for the students to have the opportunity to experience the unique activity of marching band.  We care deeply about the health and well being of our students, and want strongly for them to have the fall marching season they deserve.  We will make great effort to enforce these guidelines as we proceed into the Winter Program season.

Music:
Click links for the music you’ll be learning with the Drumline and the Front Ensemble.  Go ahead and start looking at it and learning what you can.  Don’t worry if you can’t play everything, the whole point of Winter Percussion is to teach you how to play them.
